Experience highlights
Photographer John McDermott has been photographing Angkor for over fifteen years. By sharing the observations and insights of his lengthy experience, he gives clients the opportunity to make excellent photographs of the temples and surrounding areas. Designed for enthusiastic amateur or professional photographers, a private photo tour and consultation with John McDermott may be a highlight of a discerning traveler’s visit to Angkor. During the photo tour and consultation, John will assist with both technical and conceptual aspect of photography, and meet the needs of the client at whatever skill level they may have. He will guide the clients to specific locations to provide them with the best potential possible to make interesting photos of their own, bypassing the crowds and finding areas off the beaten path. Before the tours, John will meet with the client, usually over coffee or drinks, to talk with them about their artistic and photographic desires, questions and goals. Some clients may be interested in a photojournalistic approach while others may have more artistic concerns or need technical advice. Depending on the client’s interests, John will plan a trip to certain temples or villages that will yield opportunities to create strong photographs. During the excursion, John will have conversations with the client about ways to think about photography and about the concepts of creating powerful images, as well as answering any technical questions they might have. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Clients may also choose to have John act as their personal photographer. This is an option where John will document the clients' tour through the temples of Angkor. John will then select and edit all the images and then send a link to the client where they can download them. (There is an additional fee that will apply with personal photography. Please contact StraitsJourneys for details). Longer, bespoke workshops with John at Angkor and other destinations around the world are also available. Please log in and send a secure message to StraitsJourneys to create a bespoke experience.

About the expert
- Over 15 years experience as a professional photographer - Prints of Angkor are part of the permanent collection at the National Museum in Phnom Penh - Photographs were hailed by The New York Times as “not just beautiful but iconic” John McDermott's love for Asia began in the early 1990s when he moved from the US to Thailand to join the staff of a magazine based in Bangkok as Chief Photographer. During his travels on assignments, McDermott developed a strong personal interest in the many cultural heritage sites and ancient historical ruins spread across the continent. In 1995 McDermott travelled to Cambodia to witness a total eclipse of the sun passing over Angkor. Inspired by the surreal, otherworldly light of the eclipse, he returned again and again over the next several years to create a definitive artistic record of Angkor before the arrival of large-scale tourism. John’s large format Angkor prints are on display as part of the permanent collection at the National Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His photographs are held in private collections worldwide and have been printed in numerous books and publications, including Time, Newsweek, The International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times.
